What's your fitness goal for 2023?

Updated: Jan 1, 2023

How to jumpstart your fitness and set achievable goals

It’s easy to say “These are my fitness goals for the year.”

Common goals are to loose weight, have a healthier diet, start running and tone up. The problem is, it’s rare that the goals are maintained for the year. Some simply give up half the time and park it till you come back from a holiday or maybe after a big presentation has ended or even maybe once your kid goes to back to school.

Everyone’s a victim to this habit. Let’s start breaking down some guidelines on how to make our fitness goal work.

1. Decide on 1 goal to tick off your list

The goal should be realistic and achievable to complete. It would be easier to focus on 1 goal and map out your life around it rather than having 3 goals you wouldn’t be able to keep. Example- my goal is to tone my muscles

2. Research on how this goal can be achieved

Google is your best friend. You may start keying in what fitness regime can help you with you objective. Example - what is the best way to tone my muscles

Google might share several articles on how to tone through gym, resistance-based exercise, body weight exercise, functional training. Based on these results, select an activity that is attractive to you.

Example- resistance based pilates or body weight strength training is something you prefer

3. Refine your search

Look at accessible studios that offer the type of class you need and its timings. Browse their website to get understanding of the services they offer. Read Google Reviews based on real people's opinions.

4. Make an appointment

Immerse yourself in the studio and maybe do a couple of classes to start to see if you would like to continue. From there you would have a sense check on the capabilities of the studio and its instructors. You will also get a better sense if this type of workout it suitable for you.

5. Schedule your workout 2-4 weeks in advance.

Once it’s in your calendar, it would be easier to keep the appointment rather than “finding time” to exercise. Once you've parked this, there will be a higher chance of you going to the class.

Also ensure that the frequency of appointment corresponds to your goal. Toning muscles requires 2-3x a week of exercise vs strength of 4-5x a week.

6. Find a partner for accountability

Share your goal to a friend or confidant to keep you in check every month. If you have the same fitness goals, you can motivate each other!

This is also the type to look at support other support such as nutritionists, physiotherapy and massage to help you with your goal. The more people looking after your health, the your success rate!
